Como Hotels & Resorts has launched a new coral protection programme at its luxury resort in the Maldives.
Cocoa Island by Como is now inviting guests to participate in its ‘Coral Frame Sponsorship Programme’, which aims to propagate new coral reefs with the use of metal frames planted on the seabed.
The technique, engineered by marine consultancy company Seamarc, transplants fragments of broken coral by attaching them to the metal frames. These then grow into new coral colonies.
Guests at the resort can sponsor a coral frame, receiving pictures of the new coral growth every six months. On their next visit to Cocoa Island, they will also be taken on a guided snorkel session to see their sponsored frame.
The coral frame sponsorship costs US$150 for a single frame, US$300 for couple frames and US$500 for family frames.
