HRCM welcomes TEAM's decision to reconsider strike

Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has called on Tourism Employment of the Maldives (TEAM) to reconsider holding strike on 5 October 2008 as previously planned, HRCM has said.

A statement issued by HRCM stated that the Commission met with senior members of TEAM and requested them to reconsider holding strike planned as the commission hoped that the People's Majlis will make the necessary amendments to the Employment Act, in the People’s Majlis sitting scheduled for 6 October 2008.

Referring to the information HRCM received on job security threats posed by employers on members taking part in the strike, HRCM expressed that as stipulated in section 31 of the Constitution, employees are entitled the right to refrain from working in order to take part in a strike. HRCM further called on employers refrain from taking any action that may hinder the rights of the workers.

Further the commission expressed hope that necessary amendments will be made to the Employment Act to guarantee the rights of the workers without any discrimination.
