Travel advisory alert - strike in Maldives

Friday 26 September 2008 20:02

Hotel and resort workers in Maldives, organized through the Tourism Employees Association of Maldives (TEAM), have announced an indefinite strike in hotels, resorts, airports and other tourist enterprises from October 5, in support of their demand that basic labor rights for hotel and resort workers be enshrined in the laws of the country.

The hotel and resort industry of the Maldives accounts for more than 30 percent of the country’s national income yet employees in the industry have been specifically excluded from the new law which governs employment relations.

Travelers may, therefore, expect to experience disruption in their travel plans, a circumstance which TEAM deeply regrets.
