he Cabinet has today decided to withdraw the Maldives’ nomination to the New Seven Wonders of Nature, citing the lack of a proper awarding criteria and the requirement to make a payment to proceed with the competition.

The President’s Office said the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture presented a paper on the matter to the Cabinet meeting held on April 24, where members of the Cabinet formed a sub-committee to look into the matter.

The Office stressed that the Cabinet, in today’s meeting, decided to withdraw from the New Seven Wonders of Nature after deliberating on the proposals made by the sub-committee.

The paper presented by the Tourism Ministry said that the organisers of the competition have been demanding the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) to pay a large sum of money and another payment for a sponsorship package.

The Tourism Ministry noted that the competition, considered business wise, is conducted without a proper awarding criteria.

The decision was also based on the recommendations made in the discussions held with stakeholders of the Maldives tourism industry and other industries, the President’s Office added.
