As reported on Minivan News

Around 250 protesting staff at One and Only Reethi Rah resort are threatening to go on hunger strike if two managers are not transferred, it has emerged.

“We have decided if our first and second demands are not met, we will go on hunger strike,” Hassan Sabree, a villa host at the company who was fired on Saturday after the strike, told Minivan News.

Protestors have been on strike in the staff quarters of the resort since Friday morning, while around 200 guests are being taken care of by foreign employees.

They have said they will only go back to work if the general manager and training manager are transferred to another hotel.

“We will carry on until there is a solution…The reason is because we have given more than enough time…Most of these points can be done,” Sabree.

A butler at the resort, who did not want to be named, says the group will stop eating and drinking until a resolution is found.

“We will go on a hunger strike…because we haven’t got any support from the government and management,” he said.

“We’re going to die here. We will get sick and then will have to go to hospital. It’s been four days and they still haven’t done anything,” he added.

President of Tourism Employees Association Maldives (TEAM) Ahmed Easa is now meeting Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) in the capital, Male, according to Mohamed Zuhair, press secretary at the president’s office.

Resort employees began a strike on Friday morning. On Sunday morning a group of riot police clashed with staff at the five star resort after management fired thirteen of the employees.

Managers have refused to comment, but a statement released mid-strike said that it was temporarily reducing staff due to the labour law, but that “our interests are in support of all employees”.
