Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa, which opened in the pristine and undisturbed Gaafu Alifu Atoll in April 2011, have won the coveted 2012 Green GOOD DESIGN Award – making it one of the few resorts worldwide to achieve such recognition.

The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies, and The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design have joined forces on two continents to present an innovative and challenging new public award. The Green GOOD DESIGN category identifies the world’s most pioneering examples of sustainable design, and highlights the companies that showcase an ongoing commitment to preserving the environment.

As the Hyatt Group’s first sustainable tourism development, the primary objective was to ensure that the resort was planned, designed and built in an environmentally sensitive manner. Designed by SCDA Architects of Singapore, Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaacreatively blends architecturally innovative designs with strict environmental standards. The resort is made up of 50 luxurious and contemporary villas, each carefully constructed to ensure no damage to the surrounding coral reef, to the island’s natural vegetation or to the resort’s pristine shoreline.

The first property in the Maldives to commit to the EarthCheck Planning and Design Standards during construction, the interiors include natural timber and stone to reflect the lush, indigenous surroundings and infuse contemporary design with traditional Maldivian elements. The resort site also has a very low building and infrastructure coverage area to preserve the island, and the general areas have been orientated to best deal with the tropical climate.

During operation, the resort also takes great care to minimise its effect on the environment, enhance the Maldivian experience and to be as energy efficient as possible. Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa therefore remains committed to energy saving techniques, water conservation, biodiversity protection, solid waste management and ongoing community initiatives.

Pierre Lang, General Manager, Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa commented: “We are extremely proud of the achievement and are delighted that our ongoing commitment to sustainable design has been recognised. We will continue to tread lightly in order to preserve the essence of the destination and will work hard to maintain and develop our environmental and social responsibility programmes. We hope to continue to raise the benchmark and ensure Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa remains on the path to securing a sustainable future for the environment we are in.”

In February 2012, Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa achieved Silver EarthCheck Certification, becoming one of only three resorts in the Maldives (and a handful worldwide) to be certified to this level. This achievement also follows the recent launch of the 2012 Hyatt Thrive Community Project – the company’s global corporate responsibility platform – which enables employees to continue to contribute to their communities despite living away from home.
