Environment and Energy Ministry has revealed that the Second Meeting of the South Asia Coral Reef Task Force (SACRFT) was inaugurated on Saturday, 30 August 2008 by Deputy Minister of Environment Energy and Water Abdul Razaaq Idrees.
South Asia Coral Reef Task Force was established last in 2007 by the Environment, Energy and Water Minister Ahmed Abdulla under the project of long term management of costal and marine protected areas in South Asia region funded by the European Commission and supported y UNEP, and ICRAN and implemented by South Asia Co-operative Environment Program (SACEP).
According to Environment Ministry the main objective of this meeting is to discuss the progress of the task force since its inception, discuss the implementation and reporting of the fine selected educational grants, development for communication strategy, and regional Marine and research; monitoring and policy issues in addition identify ways and sustainable financing and institutionalization of the task force regionally and nationally.
At the inauguration dinner held at Hulhule’ Island Hotel (HIH) yesterday night, the Deputy Minister highlighted that the establishment of the south Asia Coral Reef Task Force was to facilitate and coordinate in the management of coral reefs and associated ecosystems at a national level, to promote collaboration action at the regional level, encourage trans boundary responses to share environment challenges and raising the political and public profile of coral reef related issues in South Asia.
The meeting is attended by delegates from Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan in addition to Maldives. The working sessions will start on 31 August 2008, ministry said.
