President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has called on the tourism sector to ensure environmental sustainability in the pursuit of expansion of the tourism industry. President Gayoom made the statement in his message on the occasion of the World Tourism Day, which was marked yesterday.
Reflecting on this year’s World Tourism Day theme, “Tourism Responding to the Challenges of Climate Change”, the President noted that this theme was very closely related to the country. He also said that since even a slight negative change to our delicate environment could result in disastrous consequences, we should keep in mind the vulnerability of our low lying islands, when expanding the tourism industry.
In his message, President Gayoom said that we should be ready to face the challenges of climate change and that the Government was taking all steps necessary to prepare us for those challenges.
