11 new airports to be constructed in Maldives

The Government is working to construct 11 new regional airports in 11 regions and work is under way to complete them as soon as possible, said Minister of Communication and Civil Aviation Mahmoud Razi. Razi who is among the newest three cabinet ministers appointed by President Mohamed Nasheed in June said so answering questions in the People's Majlis Razi said regional airports will be constructed in Shaviyani, Noonu, Raa, Baa, Lhaviyani, Alifu Dhaalu, Dhaalu, Gaafu Alifu, Gaafu Dhaalu and Gnaviyani atolls.

The Minister further said the construction work of these airports have been handed to Airports Investment Management Company which is a company established for this project. There will be a 200 bed hotel, a yatch marina and a transit hotel in every airport in order to make the airport viable and facilitate tourism and travellers. The airport in Alifu Dhaalu Maamigili is already under construction.

There are airports in Haa Dhaalu Hanimaadhoo, Laamu Kadhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Kaadehdhoo and Seenu Gan in addition to the country's main international airport in Male' Gan airport has also been recently upgraded to an international airport.

one would think that if they were convinced of the ievitability of rising sea levels, they would instead construct ports for seaplanes.

Business are business, and a sinking island attracts more attention to Maldives tourism project than the beauty to the islands...
